5 Christmas Gift Ideas for ESL Learners and Lovers of English

Christmas is around the corner, and if you haven’t notice, it’s the biggest gift-giving season by far in America. If you have some people on your gift list who are lovers of the English language, I’ve curated a collection of some fun and thoughtful gift ideas for them—or, you can always treat yourself to a little something! After all, I know that you have been working hard!

So, without further explanation, here is my 2018 gift idea list for English language lovers.

1. Poetry magnets

What's nice about poetry magnets is that you don't have to worry about English spelling; your only job is to have fun and be creative with the language. And in the process, you might learn a few new words. Hey, that sounds like an ESL coaching session! Okay, that was cheesy, but you get the idea.

2. Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue

John McWhorter is a linguist with an insightful and delightful way of explaining things. This book is a fun read for people interested in the history of the English language. I particularly like his section of how we use “do” in English. Do you know what I mean? The word "do" has no meaning in the sentence, yet we use it, while other languages simply don’t. This can definitely make forming questions and sentences in the negative (I do not like celery!) tricky for some.

3. Dr. Seuss

I know what you’re thinking: Dr. Seuss is for kids. But, oh my, I have to disagree! The messages in some of his longer books, coupled with his amazing playfulness with the language make his books a true joy to read for ANYONE to read, in my opinion.

4. The Beatles Song Lyrics

You can learn so much about a language, band, and culture by studying lyrics. My husband and I love the Beatles. My favorite song is the haunting tune Norwegian Wood. But all of the Beatles song lyrics have something to offer a lover of English. Depending on how much "behind-the-scene" info you'd like to have, there are several collections to choose from.

5. A Pretty Journal

If you or someone you know enjoys writing and would love a journal dedicated to your English writing, might I recommend my journal notebook, Your Beautiful English: An English Journal? Having a dedicated notebook for your English musings is an easy way to make your language learning a priority. Please use coupon code HOLIDAY15 to save 15%.

So, if you want to treat yourself or another lover of English and learner in your life, I hope these ideas have inspired you. Alternatively, you can save some money and just give them the gift of great English conversation (maybe along with a cup of coffee!).
