While listening to one of my all-time favorite songs, One Day by Matisyahu, I was reminded today of why I teach English. Like the lyrics to his song, I crave a world without conflict because I am a peacekeeper at heart. I teach English because language brings people together. And when two people come together who share a language, the opportunity for deep understanding is a part of the conversation too. If understanding is there, peace is not far behind.
By teaching American English and culture, I am sharing my perspective while simultaneously opening myself up to hearing and learning my students' perspectives. This respectful and peaceful exchange is so intrinsically valuable to humanity that I can hardly put it into words myself (and words are my life!)!
So, I'll take it back to Matisyahu. I teach English because...
"All my life I've been waiting for I've been praying for For the people to say That we don´t wanna fight no more They'll be no more wars And our children will play"
Credit to Matisyahu and his lyrics for "One Day".
